Wireless LAN Networking

What is it?
WLAN or WiFi is a networking technology which enables computers to connect together using radio waves.

Why should I want it?
If you use a laptop then it gives you the freedom to be connected to the internet in any room of your house or even down the end of the garden.

How does it work?
Devices in a wireless network are connected together using network interface cards (NIC). The interface cards allow PC's and other wireless equipment to connect using a Wireless Acccess Point (WAP or Access Point AP). In an office environment the access point may connect via a wired ethernet network back to various servers, printers and mass storage.

One access point may typically be able to communicate with 30 client devices and have a range of around 100m. The range is dependant on a number of factors of which surrounding materials (Walls, Windows, doors etc) represent significant attenuation of the RF signal.

Height and antenna performane play a big part in the effectiveness of the wireless implementation. Always try to site the access point high up (eg head height or above), and ideally place the access point in a position centrally to the devices which will connect to it.

Another use for access points is to bridge two wired networks. Two access points would be used where the first is connected to wired network A, and the other to wired network B, the wired networks being seperated. The access points may be setup such that only defined client devices are able to access the devces on nework B from network A.

Data is transmitted between terminals modulated on a carrier of 2.4GHz.
